Austin-Travis County downgrades to Stage 2 after recent move to Stage 3

Just three days after the Austin-Travis County region returned to Stage 3 COVID guidelines, it has now taken another drop, moving back to Stage 2 for the first time since last summer.

Austin Public Health placed the area under Stage 2 for the first time in May 2021. In the next two months, the region re-entered its third phase while the delta wave emerged. After the omicron variant’s peak in January, the county moved to Stage 5, but later went from Stage 4 to 3.

With spring festivals around the corner, Austin Public Health encourages Texans to still use discernment and maintain their health. Masks are optional, according to APH, however, vaccination and booster shots are still highly recommended to hinder the spread. “Let’s hope this spring marks the beginning of a brighter, healthier future,” said Dr. Desmar Walkes, Austin-Travis County Health Authority. “While we enjoy this moment, don’t forget about those who are still at risk. You can always wear a mask to protect yourself and those around you.” may participate in indoor or outdoor private gatherings, dine and shop without precautions. Travel with precautions. should take preventive measures: wear a mask, wash your hands and social distance.

SXSW festival goers are required to submit proof of vaccination or show a negative COVID test. The festival is March 11-20.
