May 18 appears as the most likely date for Australia's next election at which the conservative government faces an uphill battle to win a third three-year term.

FILE - In this Feb. 13, 2019, file photo, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison addresses the media at Parliament House in Canberra. May 18 appears the most likely date for Australia’s next election at which the conservative government will seek a third three-year term. Government sources told the media on Sunday, April 7, 2019 that Morrison will not call an election on Sunday, which had been widely anticipated.

Government sources have told media that Prime Minister Scott Morrison will not call an election on Sunday, which had been widely anticipated. Once an election is called, the coalition becomes a caretaker government and would need the approval of the center-left Labor Party opposition if taxpayers were to continue funding of what are described as government public information campaigns.

Prime ministers traditionally call elections on a Sunday. The campaigns last at least 33 days and officially start a few days after the date is announced.
