Cap finally proves he's got the X-Men's backs.

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Uncanny Avengers #1 Despite being one of Marvel Comics’ preeminent heroes, Captain America hasn’t always had the strongest relationship with the X-Men. On more than one occasion, the Star-Spangled Avenger has been called out for not doing enough as an ally of mutantkind. But after the Fall of X, Steve’s new take on the Avengers Unity Squad makes it clear that he has the X-Men’s backs in their ongoing fight for survival.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Uncanny Avengers #1 by Gerry Duggan, Javier Garrón, Morry Hollowell, and Travis Lanham finds Cap recruiting the fan-favorite X-Men Psylocke and Penance to his new Avengers Unity Squad, which has been put together to fight the anti-mutant organization Orchis. The two mutant heroes are initially hesitant to join Rogers, with Psylocke making it clear that she doesn’t want to hear any lectures against killing Orchis agents.

Cap simply responds, “Then avenge them,” making it clear that he’s no longer concerned about getting his hands dirty and showing a drastic change from his previous stance on mutant-human relations.Steve Rogers Has Gone Through an Evolution Captain America has always sought to represent the best parts of his country, but it’s clear that the U.S. government’s support of Orchis has gone too far for him.

Steve’s initial Avengers Unity Squad was founded on the notion of leading by example against bigoted enemies. Although that team did ultimately save the world, it felt more like a PR move than a true push to help the X-Men survive. Captain America even dismissed his old friend Wolverine from the squad and split the team right down the middle when Logan’s brutal activities with X-Force were uncovered. So to now see him essentially approve Psylocke and Penance’s killings is a massive evolution.

Captain America hasn’t always been there for mutants when they really needed them. On more than one occasion, his optimism and idealism obfuscated the reality his most uncanny allies have faced. But now that the Uncanny Avengers have reassembled thanks to the Fall of X, it’s clear that Captain America and the X-Men are teamed up for the long haul.
