From 'Aladdin' to 'Child's Play' to 'Angel Has Fallen,' there were a large number of movies that were much better than expected.
Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani'sturned out to be both a surprisingly violent 1990's-style action comedy and a surprisingly funny take on toxic masculinity which emphasized the damage that such behavior causes to the men who drink the proverbial Kool-Aid. Toxic masculinity has been a big theme at least since, even if most of the films that dissected it didn't perform to expectations/hopes.
Finally, in a year obsessed with toxic masculinity as a new scab at which to pick for subtext and context, Universal'swent in a different direction. While the Universal film was initially sold as a bawdy"boys will be boys" R-rated comedy, it's relatively benign in its bad behavior and instead offers three"good" kids who get into R-rated adventures without turning them into jerks.
Moreover, the film exists in a world where respect for the opposite sex, and respect for your peers, is already an ingrained behavioral construct. It's not about toxic masculinity, but rather an R-rated boy-centric comedy about three kids who are pointedly not toxic. As of today, the overall summer domestic totals are down 3% from last year, which isn't a huge figure but again points to audiences spending more of their moviegoing money on a smaller pool of movies. Viewers don't go to the movies to go to the movies as much as they used to.
