Ayala: Young Latinas will don quince ballgowns and parade through West Side to promote voting

A group of young Latinas from various Texas cities, including San Antonio, will participate in a get-out-the-vote event Saturday, Oct. 29, on the city’s West Side, as part of the “Quince to the Polls” campaign.Victoria Silva turned 15 during a peak in the coronavirus pandemic. Her Brownsville family followed public health protocols and didn’t throw her a quince.

It will begin with a 3 p.m. news conference in front of the Guadalupe Theater’s beloved Jesse TreviñoCervera and Tori will have celebrity company in activist Rosie Castro, District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo and actress/activist America Ferrera, co-founder of Harness, a cultural organization that does civic engagement initiatives.

Harness has partnered with the Texas-based Jolt Initiative and its Poder Quince/Quince Power campaign aimed at engaging Latino voters, young voters and future voters in particular. Data shows Latinas are a highly influential group, statistically better voters than their male counterparts.
