San Diego State’s triple-overtime victory against Utah last season launched the Aztecs on their way to a school-record 12-win season.It marked the rise of Cameron Rising, the backup quarterback who has been the Utes’ starter and “alpha dog” ever since.Rising leads No. 14 Utah into a rematch against the Aztecs on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT at Rice-Eccles Stadium.Utah was 1-2 in its first three games last season with Charlie Brewer as its starter.
The Aztecs boosted their advantage to 24-10 with a pair of 7-yard touchdown runs by Greg Bell as the Utah offense sputtered.All of a sudden the Utes were a different team. “Charlie has decided to move on and we wish him the best,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement.“We felt Charlie Brewer was a good athlete,” SDSU defensive coordinator Kurt Mattix recalled this week. “If you watched some of the hits he took at Baylor , he was tough.
Whittingham has called Rising “an alpha dog” for his leadership, toughness and ability to make plays.Well, Rising suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in his one start in 2020 — against USC, where he attempted but six passes before being hurt — and wasn’t able to compete for the job until the summer of 2021.
“When it came down to it, Charlie had 40 or 50 games of experience , and Cam had played one quarter of one game,” Whittingham said. “It could have gone either way. We went with the experience. As it turned out, circumstances gave Cam his opportunity. He stepped in, we made the switch, and the rest is history.”
