Aztecs in a new era, Part 3: Why SDSU should let deadline pass while eyeing a more certain future

Leading up to San Diego State’s Friday deadline to inform the Mountain West whether it plans to remain in the league in 2024-25, the Union-Tribune is looking back at the Aztecs’ conference history, the reasons behind a potential move and whether it makes sense. This is Part 3.The exit fee for San Diego State to leave the Mountain West is $17 million for another few hours. At 11:01 p.m. PDT Friday, according to conference bylaws, it doubles.

De la Torre sent a letter June 13 to Nevarez and all 11 other MW presidents expressing the university’s intention to leave the conference — hardly a revelation — but inquiring about flexibility in the June 30 deadline and exit fees. It was a bad idea in this age of open records and leaked documents. Any negotiations, or attempts at them, should have been conducted by phone with Nevarez and maybe one or two presidents, without a paper trail.

Eventually, the board will wise up and force SDSU’s hand: Are you in or out? Are notifying us now and paying $17 million to leave next year, or are paying $34 million or waiting an extra year if a Pac-12 invite comes later this summer? Perhaps SDSU AD John David Wicker has been assured with 98 percent confidence that the Aztecs will get that coveted Pac-12 invite.
