San Diego State has been in and out of the media poll all season, and staying there this time might require wins over Nevada and Boise State this week
, and Charleston and New Mexico both dropped out after losing. Duke, which was first among others receiving votes, also lost, clearing a path for the Mountain West leader.
Leading metrics make a case for the Aztecs as well. They are 23rd in the NCAA’s NET and 24th in Kenpom, with a strength of schedule ranked No. 7 nationally and only two wins against Quad 4 teams . All four of SDSU’s losses are against teams currently in the top 30 of the NET. Staying in the top 25, however, might require a pair of wins this week against teams receiving votes and immediately behind them in the conference standings. The Aztecs play at third-place Nevada on Tuesday and host second-place Boise State on Friday. Looming next week is a game at Utah State , where SDSU has lost three straight by double digits.
Purdue, which began the season unranked, remained atop the poll but as the season’s first unanimous No. 1. Tennessee, Houston, Alabama and Arizona round out the top five in a week where 13 members of the Top 25 lost, including 10 teams ranked between No. 8 and 20. SDSU amassed 170 rankings points , just below Indiana and ahead of Miami. Three other Mountain West received votes: New Mexico , Boise State and Nevada .
