Grisham lost her son Christopher in a hail of bullets in 2010. She, and others who have lost family members to gun violence, gathered outside police headquarters to express their support of the chief. "We want him to come back to work," said Grisham."We want him to continue the work that he's doing in his community. For the families that have lost their children, he has been the number one advocate."

Marilyn Washington-Harris's son was killed in 2000, and she said she faced a maddening bureaucracy. But she said much of that changed under Armstrong's watch.
