The new, stripped-down production of 'Cyrano,' helmed by James McAvoy in the titular role, arrives at BAM with a singular panache after a long pandemic delay.
As was clear at the performance before the gala’s celebratory dinner, Lloyd’s production is an utterly new thing and doesn’t suffer for it.’s set is a simple plywood box, like an enormous wine crate, set against the more ornate restored walls of BAM’s Harvey Theater. Gilmour’s costumes are culled from London streetwear—a lot of tracksuits and denim.’s lighting is subtle, so when it eventually punches, it’s a knockout.
To be fair to McAvoy’s anxiety, there are reams upon reams of dialogue, countless alexandrine couplets, that he’s responsible for . Plus a lot has changed in the intervening time. He sees it in the audience too. “The American crowds have been quite surprising in that they seem to connect with the loneliness and the sadness of not just Cyrano, but the three main characters who are all objectified for either their beauty or their ugliness or their heroism or their villainy, whatever it is,” he said. “You really get that even more here.”
