Most students in the Highlands Middle School band had never picked up an instrument until six months ago. Many hours of practicing later, the band members sound like they’ve been practicing for years, and they’re playing in national festivals.

He went off to teach band at Highlands Middle School in the early 2000s, right out of college, and that was the last time the school had a band program. Zane Muhammed, who’s in the eighth grade, also had never picked up her instrument -- an alto saxophone -- before last year.
