The movie, which stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, opened in theaters on July 21. Per Variety, the Barbie box office has raked in an opening day total of $70.5 million at the domestic box office. This record-breaking total gives Barbie the best opening day of the entire year, considerably ahead of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's opening day of $51.8 million. The total also means that the movie has earned back nearly half of its roughly $145 million production budget in just a single day.
How High Could Barbie Climb Up the Box Office Charts? With this $70.5 million total, Barbie is already the 20th highest-grossing domestic movie of the year, ahead of the entire runs of big-name titles including Evil Dead Rise, Cocaine Bear, and Magic Mike's Last Dance. By the end of the weekend, it will have already risen up the chart by quite a few slots.
Barbie could potentially claim the No. 1 slot on the chart next weekend too if it plays its cards right. Next weekend sees the release of Disney's Haunted Mansion. While that is an IP title that shouldn't be discounted, Barbie had the advantage of being able to premiere before the SAG-AFTRA strike, during which actors are not promoting struck projects as they fight for fair wages, something that may impact Haunted Mansion's opening weekend.
In general, the road ahead is looking very bright for Barbie. Considering the fact that it beat Across the Spider-Verse by a wide margin, it's possible that it could land between that title and The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the second highest-grossing domestic movie of the year. It's also entirely feasible for the movie to end up above Spider-Verse in the Top 5 for the entire year so far on the worldwide chart.
