The ban was reported by state media in Vietnam on Monday, less than three weeks before the movie is scheduled to be released. Here is why the"Barbie world" is causing controversy with a map that has caused tensions in the real world.The nine-dash line is used on maps by China to claim territory over waters in the South China Sea, territory disputed by Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Taiwan.
Use of the nine-dash line in maps is seen as endorsing China's claims to the water, which is one of the most heated disputes in Asia. ESPN was widely criticized in 2019 when it aired a map of China that included the dashed line, along with claims that Taiwan was its territory.The movie has not been released in theaters in the United States or internationally. The nine-dash line reportedly is featured in the background of a single scene.
