Atty. Gen. William P. Barr told a Senate panel on Wednesday that he is reviewing how the Justice Department and the FBI conducted their counterintelligence investigation into Russian election interference, saying he thought “spying did occur” on President Trump’s campaign.

His comments put the attorney general more deeply into the partisan battle being waged by the White House and Republican lawmakers in an effort to show that alleged abuses by FBI officials prejudiced the Russia investigation from the start. On Wednesday morning, Trump told reporters that Barr was “doing a great job” by probing the Russia investigation itself.
