Fictional Vanity Fair writer Patrick Fischler chats with (the actual) VF about working with Bill Hader and Henry Winkler on Barry, and how Lon O’Neil could afford a house with a pool on a print journalist’s salary.
Oh, much longer. I mean, it took you through all seasons of the show. Any beat Cousineau had through the show, he portrayed up onstage. We were there for hours. Listen: I’ve been doing this a long time, and it’s rare you get to be with people who in every facet are incredibly talented. And that’s whatis.
Lon O’Neil really is a gumshoe reporter. A lesser reporter would have just taken Cousineau’s story and published it. But [Lon is] following up, getting all sides of it, reaching out for comment, and that actually provides a pivotal moment in the story. Can you tell me a little bit about that scene with Barry?
Bill is unbelievable to act with and to be directed by. His intensity was so strong. And then what’s great about it is he’ll be in it, and we have this intense moment. Then he cuts and he is like, “Was that all right?” Like right out of it, which is also how I work. I’m like someone who, no matter how intense, for the most part, I can just break right out of it and get right into it. I don’t need a lot of time. So I related to that.
I’m so proud to be a small part of this last season. Really, as a journeyman actor, I keep working and it’s wonderful, and I’m so lucky. But to have opportunities like this, to work on shows like this, that doesn’t come along every day. It came along at a time that I was really feeling like, All right, whatever. This business is so up and down and I’m used to it. It’s 30 years now, I’ve been doing it. I told Bill that it just gave me such a boost when we were shooting it, because I just watched him and I thought, God, there’s such greatness out there. You know, you sometimes forget that.
