Home runs are becoming more frequent in Major League Baseball due to climate change, a new study finds.
The team examined data from more than 100,000 MLB games played between 1962 and 2019, and 220,000 individual hits between 2015 and 2019. They discovered that a reduction in air density results from higher temperatures and"was the driving force" in why homers increased on hotter days. Additionally, climate change may have contributed to approximately 1% of home runs in that time frame. However, by 2100, that number could jump to 10% compared with averages between 2010 and 2019 if greenhouse gas emissions and climate change continue at their current pace.
