Battlefield 5 had more active players over Christmas than Battlefield 2042 despite being a substantially older game with no new content.
It would seem that more players were interested in 2018's Battlefield 5 than the newly-released Battlefield 2042 over Christmas. Battlefield 2042 largely underwhelmed players upon its release and has been the subject of controversy. The overwhelming amount of missing features, bugs, and other issues have led to fans being disappointed by the franchise's return to the modern-day and has seemingly even sent some players back to older entries in the series.
Upon release, Battlefield 2042 reviews were negative or mixed at best. The game has struggled to keep players engaged due to both not being very fun thanks to the bugs and design choices, but also the lack of content. There are a lot of other games vying for players' attention and many succeed by having regular content updates. GTA Online, Warzone, Halo Infinite, and a number of other titles are successfully staying relevant by giving players new things to do.
EA has created a plan to expand the Battlefield universe with three different teams under the leadership of Vince Zampella, founder of Respawn Entertainment. Whether or not EA will find any success in this remains to be seen, but fans are hoping Battlefield 2042 will find its footing in future updates, similar to DICE's Battlefront 2.
Nonetheless, Battlefield 2042 sold a lot of copies. It will likely be considered a commercial success by EA and maybe the future content updates can provide the game with some legs to make a steady comeback. For now, it seems like players may be more interested in playing older titles in the series. Whether or not EA can fully convert those players into Battlefield 2042 fans remains to be seen.
