The old school bowling alley with billiards, a restaurant and an arcade, will shutter at the end of May
When Sea Bowl first opened its doors in March of 1959, it was reportedly so popular that for three nights in a row, it didn’t even bother to close, hosting “several thousand” patrons in a single weekend. It finally shut down for a few hours at 3 a.m. on a Monday morning so construction crews could put finishing touches on the $500,000 project.
“We kept open as long as there were bowlers, and there were plenty of those,” manager Hal Duncan told the Pacifica Tribune at the time. The bowling alley changed hands in 1996 when it was taken over by the current owners, and the subsequent renovation of the 33,000-square-foot facility generated continued success. Over the years, Sea Bowl became a fixture of the community, with carnivals, air shows and car shows staged in the parking lot.
