Two St. Johns County schools are off to a superb start at the state high school golf championships.
But just look who's right there: Beachside High, playing in its first season of high school athletics, but challenging two teams who have combined to win 11 state titles.and fifth in a row finished 8-over 296 at the El Campeon Course. The Patriots are 13-over and the Barracudas, competing in a state tournament for the first time in any sport, are 16-over.
Beachside junior Nolan Harper birdied five of his last six holes on the front nine for a 6-under 30, then righted the ship after a couple of stumbles on the back nine to take a one-shot lead over Brock Blais of Ponte Vedra and Lorenzo Rodriguez of Belen Jesuit at 4-under-par 68.of Ponte Vedra, Sohan Patel of American Heritage and Jonah Nacional of Beachside are among players tied for fifth at 1-over 73.
Harper bogeyed three of his first six holes on the back nine but birdied the 18th hole to wrest sole possession of the lead from Blais and Rodriguez. Ponte Vedra and American Heritage were the only teams that didn't have to count a player in the 80s towards their team score.Fernandina Beach is eighth, led by Noah Reynolds . Bishop Kenny is tied for ninth, led by Cody Tucker .
In the girls Class 2A tournament at the Las Colinas Course, American Heritage has an eight-shot lead over Ponte Vedra at 21-over 309. Lauren Barned was the low player for the Sharks with a 77 and Nancy Cox shot 78.Alexandra Gazzoli of Mantanzas is the individual leader with a 68. Raleinne Nacional of Beachside, playing as an individual, is seventh with a 73.
