Betty White’s accomplishments went far beyond show biz | Commentary
As I write this, Betty White smiles at me from the cover of the special edition ofmagazine titled “Betty White turns 100!” She has smiled at me from TV screens for my entire life. As we learn that she will not complete her 100th year on January 17, it is fitting to recount the things she did accomplish—and not just her list of show business credits.
Betty White blazed a trail of bold accomplishment decades before the roles that wrapped her permanently around our hearts. A glowing personal life, an infectiously uplifting sprit and an unflappable sense of humor made her far more than a treasured star. She became something few can achieve, especially in the harsh light of TV fame; she was a constant example to all of us of how to tackle life.
But devotion to her marriage, along with her numerous other praiseworthy traits, never struck her as something that should earn fulsome praise. Keeping promises, radiating a positive spirit and striving to serve others are just things she felt people were supposed to do.. But she knew that good character did not happen by accident.
But it is Sue Ann and Rose that would fuse Betty White onto our national memory. The two characters could not be more different, and yet they embodied vital features of the Betty White magic—Sue Ann’s mischievous humor and Rose’s enormous heart.Some of her most memorable triumphs are the more recent ones, as when she hostedat age 88, winning a seventh Emmy in the process.
