Emmitt Earl Byrd, a 44-year-old inmate in the Bexar County Jail, was found dead in his cell on Thursday, April 21, 2022. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said he hung himself.A man accused of assaulting a family member killed himself Thursday morning at the Bexar County jail, officials said.
Emmitt Earl Byrd, 44, was discovered hanged and unresponsive at about 9:51 a.m., according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. A detention officer cut Byrd down from the ceiling and began life saving measures. Medical staff attempted to revive Byrd until first responders arrived and continued chest compressions, authorities said.First responders pronounced Byrd dead at 10:17 a.m., officials said.
Per standard procedure, the sheriff’s office is conducting three concurrent investigations into Byrd’s death — by the criminal investigations division, internal affairs and the public integrity unit. In accordance with the Sandra Bland Act, the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office was notified of the death as an outside agency required to investigate.
