Canadian teen Bianca Andreescu beats Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 to win the US Open. Williams has lost her last 4 grand slam finals.
New York Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian to win a grand slam singles title when she beat Serena Williams in the US Open final 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday.
At 19, Andreescu is the first teen to win a major since Maria Sharapova 13 years ago. She had to hold off Williams in the second set, as the American rallied from 5-1 down and saved a match point to get to 5-5. But on her third match point, Andreescu crushed a return winner. Williams — watched by good friend Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex — won her first US Open in 1999 before Andreescu was born but must wait until 2020 to potentially earn a record-tying 24th grand slam title.
