The U.S. on Friday announced a new $345 million weapons aid package for Taiwan, a move that is likely to anger China, which considers the island its own territory.

China considers close U.S. ally Taiwan its own province and regularly sends planes and warships to harass the island's military and intimidate its 23 million citizens. It has never renounced the use of force to annex the island. Taiwan strongly opposes China's sovereignty claims and has asserted its independence.
Earlier this month, U.S. Army General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the U.S. and its allies need to speed up the delivery of aid to Taiwan."The speed at which we, the United States, or other countries assist Taiwan in improving defensive capabilities, I think that probably needs to be accelerated in the years to come," Milley told reporters during a visit to Tokyo.
