Biden announces first Gulf offshore wind auction

“America’s clean energy transition is happening right here and now," said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. “There is no time to waste in making bold investments to address the climate crisis, and building a strong domestic offshore wind industry is key to meeting that challenge head on.” The Gulf of Mexico sale would be the nation's fourth offshore wind auction, following sales along the northeast United States, the mid-Atlantic region and the Pacific Coast., towards meeting its goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid century. So far, ten U.S. offshore wind projects have been announced.
No date has been set for the Gulf's offshore wind auction, and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will be taking public comment on their plans for 60 days. “BOEM is committed to ensuring any offshore wind activities are done in a manner that avoids or minimizes potential impacts to the ocean and ocean users,” said BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein.
