Known as the “Ellis Island of the Southwest,” El Paso is a heavily Democratic city that at any other time would welcome the president with open arms. But today, Biden is expected to be received with a dose of skepticism and mixed feelings.
On Sunday, Biden will be joined by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas; Reps. Veronica Escobar, Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez, all Democrats; and El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser and Samaniego, as well as other community and business leaders, according to a White House official.Biden is expected to visit the Bridge of the Americas Port of Entry with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, members of Congress and local officials and law enforcement.
The president will also hear from local business leaders about the critical economic impact immigrants have on this region to address workforce shortages, a White House official said. The numbers of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border has risen dramatically during Biden’s first two years in office. There were more than 2.38 million stops during the year that ended Sept. 30, the first time the number topped 2 million. The administration has struggled to clamp down on crossings, reluctant to take hard-line measures that would resemble those of the administration of President Donald J. Trump.
