President Joe Biden has a new favorite foil on the stump — and it’s not former President Donald Trump., a first-term Republican and former college football coach, has earned a steady spot in Biden’s fundraising pitches, social media and official speeches. While it’s unusual for a junior senator to draw such ire, the reality this summer is Tuberville’s one-man notoriety show has become a Washington must-watch.
Tuberville responded in kind in an interview: “He was a better senator than a president.” And he went further, likening the president to a dictator. But the beef goes deeper: After Trump endorsed Tuberville in 2020 over his former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Tuberville went on to defeat one of Biden’s closest allies, Doug Jones, in the general election. Then Tuberville’s very first vote as a senator was objecting to Biden’s election win. He also immediately endorsed Trump’s presidential reelection campaign last fall.
