MANAGING UTAH LAKE - A pair of bills have been introduced in the Utah State Legislature to help manage Utah Lake in the future, including the potential for any island development.
Rep. Keven Stratton, R-Orem, filed House Bill 240 which requires the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands, the Utah State Legislature and the governor to all sign off on transferring any public lands to a private entity.
A company called Lake Restoration Solutions has filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, seeking to dredge the lake and build islands on it with the material. The company has argued that the project could benefit Utah County economically, as well as helping to clean up the lake. "We don’t want to get outside of the process that’s established. That will be driven by the Corps, but they have said we’re allowed to hold some public meetings as part of that process," Benson told commissioners.

Letter: Sewage, fertilizers and contaminated soil: A few questions about ‘saving’ Utah Lake by building islandsI have a couple of questions for the people at Lake Restoration Solutions (LRS). These are the folks that supposedly want to “save” Utah Lake. In a Tribune article a few months ago LRS identified two main problems causing the pollution in Utah Lake. One was treated wastewater being dumped into the lake. The other was agriculture runoff containing contaminants from fertilizer and pesticides. LRS has an ambitious goal of building several islands in the middle of Utah Lake and creating a new settlement of up to 500,000 people. That’s more than twice the population of Provo and Orem combined.
