Thousands of birds have died this winter, many now washing ashore at the Great Salt Lake. A biologist explains what's causing the birds to die and what's being done to take care of the issue.

SALT LAKE CITY — Thousands of birds have died this winter, many now washing ashore at the Great Salt Lake.

Tourists take in all sorts of views at the lake. "It was really beautiful seeing the mountains surrounding the lake," Matthews said. As lawmakers were opening the state's wallet to spend a half billion dollars on water conservation including strategies in 2022, the birds began showing up in greater numbers at a nature conservatory next to the Great Salt Lake in western Davis County.

Luft said he gets a lot of phone calls and messages about dead birds at the lake. "Almost every year, we have these die-offs," he said.
