EXCLUSIVE: Rising biotech Cellino is raising $75 million to to make it easier to produce stem cells with AI

. Several companies have struggled to transition from producing small batches of cells for clinical trials to distributing commercial drugs to the masses.

Cell therapies are generally grown in small batches. Only 10% to 20% of the cells in each batch will be of a high enough quality for use, making the entire process time-consuming and expensive. In some cases, the cells are specialized enough that each batch will work as treatment for only a single patient. with their cell therapies for cancer, which need to be tailored to a patient's individual immune system.

By 2025, Cellino anticipates making 10 million cells for about $30,000, according to the company. Making that many cells would cost about $1 million now, CEO Nabiha SaklayenCellino was founded in 2017 by Saklayen and Marinna Madrid, who were then Harvard University doctoral students, as well as the entrepreneur Matthias Wagner.
