, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn seems to have settled into the same niche occupied by Marvel’sHarley’s life is a series of intoxicated decisions, spiced-up by random acts of extreme violence, her story sparked by her break-up with the Joker, the loss of his protection forcing her to finally face the consequences of her actions. Harley’s superpower seems to be dumb luck; she’s a cocaine-fuelled lunatic wielding a beanbag bazooka, her prowess in combat an amusing blend of Bugs Bunny and John Wick.
The Birds could have used more time together - the film is at its best when they’re just hanging out and talking, although watching them pulverise their enemies is deeply satisfying. While the sharply choreographed action sequences are incredibly entertaining, Harley’s character arc is lacking a vital element.
The film works its way around this by having Black Mask , be a stand-in for the clown prince of crime. McGregor, a dandyish gang boss with a sociopathic streak, harboring a passion for peeling off people's faces, stands in clear parallel to the Joker’s unhinged charisma, Harley’s victory over him symbolizing her newfound independence.
The Birds, however, have been successfully established as a new franchise, as has Harley herself - Margot Robbie is perfect in the role, and is clearly having a blast. A sequel might deliver the inevitable confrontation with her ex that Harley needs, and this film puts her and the rest of the characters in a good place, ready to fly to new heights.
