Teams of Birmingham officers hit the streets Wednesday as part of the police department’s annual Operation Close Out, an initiative aimed at knocking down crime during the holiday season.

Dozens of officers met Wednesday afternoon outside the Bill Harris Arena at the Crossplex to kick off the operation. Thurmond spoke with the team about their plans for the night, mentioning specific areas down to the block that needed to be watched. Typically, the chief said, robberies and burglaries pick up during December. “People are out trying to steal to get money or things for Christmas,’’ he said. “Of course, violent crimes such as shootings and homicides will also be addressed.”

“They’re out looking for the bad guys and the bad girls,’’ Thurmond said. “They’re looking for people causing problems.”“It’s been very effective,’’ Thurmond said. “I think our citizens like it. They deserve to know that we’re out working hard to keep them safe during the holiday season.”
