For those hoping to preserve the theater’s orchestra level seats and historic programming, the fight is far from over.

“This is the turning point. This is why we’re all here biting our nails, shaking in our boots,” Bandy said. “We all know the decision that’s made today defines how we move forward as a city, as a landmark.”

“This is a place to experience and understand queer community and culture. It is the historic beautiful movie palace interior of the Castro Theatre that gives life to these experiences,” Wreck said. “This is why it’s so important that historic preservation policy honors intangible culture. … I can tell you built environments and cultural production cannot be separated. If you remove parts of the interior elements of this theater, it changes the entire place.

“Since 1987, I have lived in and around the Castro District, and my favorite place to see movies in the world is the Castro Theatre,” he said. “It’s a movie theater. It is not a rock venue. It is not a disco. It is not an EDM … you know, all kinds of weird drugs and the place they turned Slim’s into. It was built to be not just any movie theater, but a beautiful and great movie theater at a time when there was competition for that in this town, but the Castro was the one that survived.

Early on during public comment, an individual in a rainbow fur coat and matching feather boa marched up to the podium, holding a sign that read “Change the Seats.” It was David Thompson, or Gaybraham Lincoln, whom youHe described the Castro neighborhood as “one of the most depressing sights in San Francisco today.”
