On HSMTMTS season 3, Corbin Bleau plays a meta version of himself. 'I’m not playing Chad, I’m playing Corbin. I’m playing a little bit more of a jaded, meaner version of [myself], but we’ll see the arc how it goes over the process.'
Corbin Bleu previews his upcoming appearance in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3. Expected to debut on Disney+ later this year, High School Musical season 3 will shift its focus away from the academic year and follow the main characters as they attend Camp Shallow Lake. At the family-owned resort in California, they prepare to put on a summer production of Frozen. To accommodate the change, HSMTMTS has relocated its production from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles.
Along with Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo, who will be returning to reprise their roles as Ricky Bowen and Nini Roberts, respectively, High School Musical season 3 will feature guest appearances from Meg Donnelly as Val, a camp counselor who helps with the choreography. Hannah Montana alum Jason Earles will portray the camp’s director, Dewey, who is described as a killjoy. The upcoming episodes will also include Bleu, who played Chad Danforth in the first three High School Musical movies.
“[It’s] definitely very meta. I’m playing myself. I’m not playing Chad, I’m playing Corbin. I’m playing a little bit more of a jaded, meaner version of [myself], but we’ll see the arc how it goes over the process. It’s such a great time of nostalgia, and I feel like I’m very honored that I am being able to go back and revisit that.”
HSMTMTS is no stranger to highlighting its Disney influences, as evidenced by the fact that season 3 will include music from both Frozen and Camp Rock. But the connection to the High School Musical movies is baked into the very premise of the series. HSMTMTS exists in a world where the High School Musical franchise actually happened. And, in a clever twist, the series’ central high school – East High – is noted as the place where the franchise was actually filmed.
Although it’s arguable that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is better off without having to connect to the movies, it should be interesting to see what Bleu’s guest appearance will consist of. Will the show make a joke of the fact that he’s not as widely known as Zac Efron? Or will it be more absurd in its depiction of the actor? In any case, it’s one of the many storytelling avenues offered up by the third installment’s change of location.
