When the temperature outside rises to 105 degrees or hotter, the pavement can hit 140 degrees – hot enough to cause severe burns and scarring.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A group of UNLV surgeons recently finished a 5-year study and learned something that may be no surprise to Southern Nevada residents: Pavement gets hot.
So hot, in fact, that a few seconds of exposure is enough to cause second-degree burns and permanent scarring. “We’ve seen that over the summer months, we’ve had an increase in the number of pavement burns that have been admitted to our hospital,” said Dr. Jorge A. Vega, of the UNLV School of Medicine. “We see those kind of burns from the hot asphalt in the feet or other extremities from people sitting down or laying on the ground.”
In short, the study found a correlation: When the temperature outside rises to 105 degrees or hotter, the pavement can warm to higher than 140 degrees – hot enough to cause severe burns. That means summer months in Las Vegas could be dangerous for residents unaware of the melting power of pavement. How many pavement burns were treated? From 2013 to 2017, the medical staff handled 173 pavement-related burn cases.
The study found that 149 of those cases were isolated pavement burn injuries. The remaining 24 cases involved pavement burns plus another mechanism of burn-related injury – friction burns from car crashes or injuries from car vs. pedestrian incidents. When the ambient temperature reaches 111 degrees, the pavement could get hotter than 147 degrees – hot enough to cause second- and third-degree burns in seconds.Who is at risk for pavement burns?• Children who are unaware of the hot pavement.
