You've likely seen the news - BMW has bought family-run Alpina. Good news or bad?
Of all the one-make tuners, there is arguably none regarded with greater affection than Alpina. Here was a family-owned firm with long-established and peerless track record for making the already very good, better. It based its approach on meeting the demands of an upmarket BMW buyer who wished to combine superior speed with superlative levels of comfort. Consequently, it eschewed circuit development and put all its efforts into producing road-biased performance cars.
"BMW and Alpina are a perfect fit," said Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President Customer and Brand BMW."The Alpina brand has matured alongside BMW over the past 50 years and has everything it takes to make the heart of an automotive connoisseur beat faster all over the world. It finds the right balance between cultivated sportiness, luxury, and exclusivity. We are delighted to acquire the trademark rights to Alpina and add new vehicle capturing DNA to the BMW portfolio.
So what does it mean in the short term? Well, as ever with these arrangements, the tap cannot simply be turned off - and nor should it be. Alpina reported 2021 as its most successful year to date, and it will continue to develop and produce new models in Buchloe until the end of 2025 at least."In the coming years we will showcase new, exciting, dynamic and efficient automobiles.
"With our in-depth expertise and know-how, we will continue to bring different but impressive mobility offerings to market", says Florian Bovensiepen, another of the Alpina MDs."Our family, our employees will continue to stand for engineering quality of the highest standard. Our manufacturing activities will transform into engineering services over time. Through this strategic reorganisation the operations of the company in Buchloe is safeguarded well into the future.
