The 5-series goes electric! Here's our first look at the BMW i5
• i5 eDrive40 – a rear-wheel drive model with a single 335bhp electric motor and a TBC range of 293-364 miles on the WLTP test cycle.
The car is almost as heavily camouflaged inside as out, but the new-generation Curved Display is visible with updated 8.5 operating logic like the new 7-series , and naturally there’s a clear sense of the driving environment – the driver’s seat is almost surprisingly low-set given the presence of a battery under the floor and hints at a sporting flavour in an otherwise wide, roomy and lengthy 7-series sort of space that mentally prepares you for comfort and refinement.
Front-end bite is high and body control strong, so the i5 feels far more settled than expected when rollercoastered into faster corners, and when I carve harder through mid-speed flicks, the rear-wheel steering’s contribution becomes very obvious. Not obvious in an unnatural sort of way, because it’s deftly integrated, but there’s agility here like a significantly smaller car.
My test drive is a very different experience in the M60 and includes following a BMW engineer in an M4 on the Miramas handling circuit – fast and narrow with a mix of flicks, long corners and a little fiddly bit that feels more like an access road, it’s a real challenge but the M60 monsters it. The way the i5 deals with lower speed corners is borderline surreal. There’s mighty purchase at the front end, then a pronounced rear-wheel steering effect to arc you through the corner – no sooner have you turned in than you can pick up the throttle again, meaning minimum cornering speeds are high. Despite feeding in early throttle with steering lock still applied in an all-wheel drive car, I didn’t notice any steering corruption or traction control interference.

This one is number 295 Alpina based the B10 V8 on the E39 540i, with a new engine block bored out to 4.6 litres, new crankshaft and more aggressive camshafts, hand-fettled ports, lighter, higher-compression Mahle pistons and reprogrammed injection system, giving 340bhp and 470nM of torque. Suspension and brakes were also uprated. Last serviced 15/12/2021 at 105854m plus new front discs and pads, The V5 would indicate it’s been in one family ownership since 2007, and we’re given to understand it’s spent most of the last few years in France. It will come with a fresh 12M MOT on sale, a service, and 6m warranty It drives superbly, sounds great, and is the epitome of an iron fist in a velvet glove, as it looks quite subtle in my opinion. I really like it. On our own website, you’ll find our usual 2 comprehensive videos – a walkaround appraisal, and driving impressions, which form part of the description. Viewing by prior appointment.
