It was unclear Monday afternoon why the commercial scuba diving vessel caught fire as it carried passengers near Santa Barbara, California.
Bob Hansen and his wife, Shirley, helped save five lives Monday morning when they allowed crew members fleeing a burning boat to climb on their pleasure boat. But the California couple were soon overtaken by a sense of helplessness as they considered the passengers in the doomed vessel.Sleeping on the top deck, they had noticed the fire too late to assist the 33 passengers below.
They tended to the wet, cold crew members, who had jumped in the chilly water with just underwear on, providing them warm clothes and blankets. One had a broken leg, another one had a twisted ankle. Hansen said he started the engines of his boat, intending to make his way toward the blazing vessel. The captain, however, suggested he contact the Coast Guard instead. Two crew members returned to the burning boat on the dinghy but couldn’t locate any survivors.
The Hansens said they wished they could have done more. Their boat is large enough to fit all of the Conception's passengers, if only they had found any, Bob Hansen said.
