Boris Johnson is in talks over Brexit with Emmanuel Macron in Paris

On Wednesday, Macron told reporters: “We have to help the British deal with this internal democratic crisis, but we must not be hostage to it nor export it.”without a deal in placeJohnson, who has committed to pull the U.K. out of the EU by October 31, wants to get rid of the Irish backstop, a key point in deal struck between the trading bloc and former prime minister Theresa May.
On Wednesday, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel ramped up pressure on Britain to find a plan, effectively handing Johnson a 30-day deadline to come up with an alternative to the “fallback” Irish backstop and convince the EU of his plan. Johnson said he was “more than happy” with the “blistering timetable,” adding that it would be possible with “sufficient patience.” The two held a joint press conference in Berlin.
