San Diego State-bound running back leads Mater Dei Catholic into opening-night showdown with fellow parochial power Cathedral Catholic
Before he picked what college to attend, first Mater Dei Catholic’s Anthony McMillian had to decide what position he wanted to play. Defensively, Cathedral Catholic is noted for its physical, back-down-from-no-one style, and in the bruising McMillian, the Dons will meet a back who likewise dishes out punishment. McMillian rushed for 736 yards as a sophomore, then 1,270 last season. To date, he has been the classic, downhill, north-and-south, get-out-of-my-way back.“As a big back, if he runs the ball the right way he’s going to wear people down,” said Joyner. “Not every run has to be 60 yards, but eventually he’ll break one off. In big games, he always wears an opponent down. When he runs the right way, people don’t want to deal with him.
McMillian is one of Joyner’s favorite players and not just because he’s a Division I athlete. His playful personality keeps the Crusaders loose yet he knows when to be all business. Mater Dei’s Anthony McMillian Jr. celebrates after the Crusaders beat McClymonds for the Division 2-AA state title.
