Boscov said he has never moved a store because of a poor-performing mall.
Colonial Park MallBoscov, the 73-year-old CEO of the $1.2 billion family-owned company, makes an effort to go to as many of the retailer’s 49 stores each year as he can. But he has something especially noteworthy to share with these workers today.
He tells the employees how the company has been making attempts to make a number of changes, including an increase in women’s shoes, and the retailer will soon have a trial run on self-checkouts in 14 stores. “We’re going to be here for the next 100 years,” he says and then jokes “I’m probably not going to be here that whole time.”
“I think mixed-use is the way to go,” he says. “When there is residential, when there is medical … when there are restaurants, it’s good for everybody.”Boscov says that at first, when malls started to struggle, there were concerns but the company is not as concerned anymore because they’ve learned over time that Boscov’s is enough of a destination to survive on its own.He points to a Boscov’s store in New Jersey as an example.
