Yes, 'It Chapter Two' is going to open 1/4 lower than 'It,' but a $90 million opening weekend for a $70 million-budgeted, three-hour, R-rated horror movie is still a big win.

That includes $10.5 million in Thursday previews grosses, meaning the sequel earned a slightly larger percentage of its “opening day” gross on Thursday than the first. That 2017 blockbuster, which opened on this same early September weekend, earned a then-record $13.5 million in Thursday grosses which made up 26% of its $50.4 million Friday. So, yes, the sequel’s opening day dropped 25% from its predecessor.

This longer, less-acclaimed and slightly less buzzy/primal sequel was never going to match its predecessor’s domestic take.overperformed to a ridiculous degree here and abroad, so a reasonable downturn was always the likely scenario. This is going to be one of those weekends where I have to explain why a movie opened lower than hoped even as the actual result remains squarely in the realm of “very good.

Directed by Andy Muschietti and penned by Gary Dauberman, the second installment of a two-part adaptation of the 1987 Stephen King novel features the now-adult members of the Losers Club, played by Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and a movie-stealing Bill Hader, as they return to their hometown to confront the supernatural menace they thought they defeated when they were kids. But even with comparatively less buzz and inferior reviews, it’s still an incredibly popular property.
