Joined by Edie Brickell, Houser propelled the band onto the pop charts with one foot in fusion and the other in funk.
“He nodded and played this great part and I started singing about him [and] celebrating his generosity to stay … Our band’s very last jam was a playful song about Brad,” Brickell wrote in the post. “I loved him. He taught me a lot.”
A talented saxophonist who switched to bass guitar at age 18, Houser attended Hillcrest High School in Dallas before co-founding New Bohemians in the early ‘80s. After Brickell joined in 1985, the group became the toast of Deep Ellum and soon signed a deal with Geffen Records. The New Bohemians, from left to right, Brandon Ali, Brad Houser, John Bush, and Kenny Withrow, pose for a photo in 1994.
Inspired by Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius and Motown’s James Jamerson, Houser anchored New Bohemiams with one foot in fusion and the other in funk. His mellifluous bass line in “What I Am” helped propel the song into the Billboard Top 10 in 1988. His melodic style and speedy picking earned him a high profile in the bass-guitar community. Reverend Guitars named two basses after him, andBut Houser thought of himself first and foremost as a support player whose role was to be “invisible in the music … 98 percent of the time, it’s about being behind the curtain, making a big cushion for everybody else to inhabit,” he said in a 2012 interview with the audio cable maker Asterope.
