The Long Beach resident was booked into jail on two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer.

BRENTWOOD – A man suspected of holding a woman against her will Sunday night at a Brentwood apartment complex andwho tried to intervene has been identified as Joshua Smith, 30, of Long Beach, authorities said.

At least one officer returned fire, injuring Smith. The woman was also injured, but it was not immediately clear if she was hit by the officer’s gunfire. Both of them were taken to a hospital and were expected to survive. On Monday, Smith was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer and a felony parole warrant, according to the Brentwood Police Department.

The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. Sunday at the Brentwood Garden Apartments at 180 Sycamore Ave. Officers were already in the area on another call when they were directed to the complex for a report of an armed man holding a woman against her will. Officers heard gunshots as they arrived at the scene and found the man and woman in a breezeway between apartments. Police said the man fired more than one shot at officers as they approached. That’s when at least one of them returned fire.A loaded gun and shell casings were recovered at the scene, police said.
