Brett Sullivan hits first MLB homer, drives in first four runs and Juan Soto drives in last three as Padres secure series win over Reds
The 29-year-old rookie hit the first home run of his career and Soto continued the first real hot stretch of the season, a team-up that was all the Padres needed in a 7-1 win over the Reds that secured a second straight series victory.Up next: The NL West-leading Dodgers in a rematch of last year’s NLDS as the Padres finally begin to click.
Soto doing those sort of things — the same goes for Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts — is the very foundation of the Padres’ World Series aspirations. Sullivan cruised into second base in the second inning with a two-run double to stake the Padres to an early lead. Two innings later, he was first-pitch swinging against Reds left-hander Alex Young, got the bat head out front on a 90 mph sinker and pulled it over the wall in right field.
Padres catchers entered Wednesday with a .168 batting average, tied for the worst in the majors. Sullivan started 0-for-7 before singling last week in Chicago in his third start behind the plate.
