If Matt Walsh joined the Navy to see the world, his stint in the service did not completely scratch that itch. After the military, the New York native found another way to indulge his wanderlust: beer.
“He’s a legend,” said Shawn Steele, a friend and director of brewing operations for Thorn Brewing. “He’s responsible for all the original Modern Times beers.”Walsh’s beer career began at AleSmth, where swept floors and washed kegs. He spent a decade at Karl Strauss developing distinctive beers like Big Barrel, an imperial IPA.
Soon, though, he resumed wandering: Hong Kong, as head brewer for Gweilo ; Kikuyu, Kenya, crafting beers at 254 brewery ; and India, this spring. The cause of death? That’s still unclear, although foul play was not suspected. The causes of his life?
