Prime Minister Johnson said he had little choice but to call an election after MPs voted to take control of the Commons agenda and vote to delay Brexit.
: British lawmakers will move to pass a bill that will make a no-deal Brexit illegal after last night voting to take control of today’s parliamentary timetable, a move that marked Boris Johnson’s first defeat as Prime Minister and could trigger a general election.
Among those Tory MPs was Sir Nicholas Soames, grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, former chancellor Philip Hammond and Ken Clarke, the longest sitting MP in the Commons. The government is then expected to formally propose a general election, a move which will require the approval of two thirds of MPs. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said he will not approve a general election unless MPs vote to take no-deal off the table. The pound rallied against the dollar reaching 1.21 after plunging to the lowest levels since 2017 amid the political turmoil.
