Griner will stay at a military center that helps recently released prisoners of war and hostages transition back into society. The highly structured program — staffed by a battery of physicians, psychiatrists, physical therapists and other specialists — is designed to help patients overcome the debilitating effects of captivity and isolation.
“She’s safe, she’s on a plane, she’s on her way home,” President Joe Biden said from the White House, where he was accompanied by Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, and administration officials. Bergdahl was the only American POW during the 20-year conflict in Afghanistan. He was held captive for 1,797 days. After his release in 2014, he underwent treatment at BAMC’s reintegration center, though ultimately he was kicked out of the military for desertion.
