Brittney Griner, the Phoenix Mercury player detained in Russia, got an Oscars shoutout by Ben Proudfoot, director of 'The Queen of Basketball.'

on drug charges, got a shoutout at the Academy Awards Sunday.

Ben Proudfoot, the director of “The Queen of Basketball,” a profile of Lucy Harris, won the Oscar for best documentary short. At the end of his speech he said, “One last thing. President Biden, bring Brittney Griner home.” Griner is a seven-time WNBA All-Star and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. She has played for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia since 2015.

She reportedly was arrested in February after a drug-sniffing dog allegedly detected vaping equipment with cannabis oil cartridges at an airport near Moscow. Russian media have reported that her detention
