“I intend to play basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season, and in doing so, I look forward to being able to say ‘thank you’ to those of you who advocated, wrote, and posted for me in person soon,” she wrote in thedetained at an airport in Moscow in February after Russian authorities said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage.
In November, Griner was sentenced to 9 years working in a Russian penal colony after pleading guilty to the drug charges, insisting it was “an honest mistake" and that she did not intend to break Russian law.
