Sterns put an exclamation point on his performance during Simmons’ absence with the first multi-interception game of his career in Thursday’s overtime defeat to the Colts.
On Sterns’ first pick in the second quarter, the safety paused in a soft spot in the Broncos’ zone, sitting underneath the middle-field routes. Ryan didn’t see him, and Sterns easily jumped the pass intended for tight end Kylen Granson and ran it back 23 yards. Ryan was similarly fooled by Sterns on the safety’s second pick in the third quarter, when Sterns jumped a pass intended for receiver Michael Pittman Jr.
While Simmons is tracking to return for the Broncos’ Week 6 divisional showdown on Monday Night Football at SoFi Stadium, so too is P.J. Locke, who played the dime back in Simmons’ absence before suffering a concussion in Week 4. But it’s been the growth of Sterns that has been most noticeable to teammates through the first five games. He is the primary reason there hasn’t been a gaping hole in Denver’s defense with Simmons out.
